Introduction to Scholarly Publishing

In this workshop for undergraduates, you will learn about the nuts and bolts of scholarly publishing. What makes a publication "scholarly? and how does that differ from "non-scholarly" publications? This will include a review of the peer review process and tools for determining if a journal is peer reviewed. We will also discuss the economic, social, legal, and institutional forces influencing the creation and publication of scholarship. This session will help students understand the context of the dissemination of research. We will review tools for getting information about journals, and strategies for accessing research after graduation. Pizza and cookies will be provided by the Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research (though students should bring their own beverage).
