Data Bytes - Technology Commercialization with Cowboy Innovations: Seeking Research Born Innovations

Patents are a valuable resource to the research process as they are rich in enabled technical information. Cowboy Innovations at Oklahoma State University provides seamless connections between Oklahoma State University research and industry to accelerate innovative solutions to market and develop collaborative engagements spanning the region, state, and worldwide. Learn about OSU’s Office Technology Commercialization’s commercialization/tech transfer process and how to identify and disclose innovations and inventions. Cowboy Innovations also provides engagement opportunities, NSF ICORPS programs, and a mentor network through Brightest Orange Ventures. Other resources on campus include the Patent and Trademark Resource Center for preliminary patent and trademark research and the New Product Development Center for prototype development. Amanda Aker is a graduate of Oklahoma State University’s College of Chemical Engineering and has been a registered Patent Agent for over 10 years. She has over 20 years of experience in industrial intellectual property management, litigation support, and innovation capture.  In industry Amanda has managed intellectual property portfolios for small business to multi-billion-dollar international corporations. Her portfolios covered a wide range of technologies including handheld sensors, unmanned systems, infrared sensors, optics, maritime, neural networks, chemistry, concrete maturity, batteries, nanoparticles, first responder comms/sensors, security systems/sensors, image processing, and ChemBio Warfare detection and neutralization. Amanda has been with OSU for since April 2022 as a Licensing Associate working with engineering and hard sciences.

Russell Hopper has over 30 years experience in technology commercialization and startups. He spent five years working with MBI International (associated with Michigan State University) to start companies based on their agricultural and industrial biotechnology inventions.  He then spent six years working in the semiconductor industry in business and technology development.  Russ then worked for the Los Alamos National Lab in licensing and as an Entrepreneur in Residence.  He has been at OSU for over 8 years as a Senior Licensing Associate working with Engineering, Agriculture and Life Science inventions. He was Interim Director of his office during the pandemic.

As Technology and Business Development Manager for Oklahoma State University’s Office of Technology Commercialization,
Jai Hari Rajendran is responsible for analyzing the commercialization potential of new inventions made by OSU researchers and marketing those inventions to potential licensees. Jai also leads the OSU App Center, where he administers the development and commercialization of mobile apps. Previously he managed the day-to-day operations of Cowboy Technologies, an OSU-affiliated for-profit, early seed-stage investment company that identifies, invests, and develops university technology startups. In that role, he also developed business plans and participated in fundraising efforts for individual startups. Jai holds an MBA from OSU and a B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Prior to enrolling at OSU, he worked as a Business Development and Export Manager in the medical device industry.
